Rolex Day Date Oyster Rivets Cream Dial Ref. 1802 year 1977 (last of the series)
Historical notes
In 1959 the ref. 6611 gave way to the new 1803 or 1802, characterised by a new, slimmer case and a newly created movement: cal.1555 (18,000 vibrations) was adopted which, after 1965, would give way to the successor cal.1556 (19,800 vibrations).
In 1972, the movement received the introduction of the detent, useful for perfectly synchronising one’s watch.
The reference 1802 would remain in production until 1977, becoming the Rolex Day-Date par excellence in the collective imagination of enthusiasts.
As with its predecessors, it was produced exclusively in gold, in yellow, pink and white variants, as well as the rare platinum version.
Typical of the 1970s is the option of the sought-after enamel dials in very bright colours.
The considerable variety of models (think of the ‘bark’ finish or the rare smooth bezel) and materials makes it possible to configure numerous variants to suit the most diverse tastes.
In addition, the customer is given a choice of no less than 23 different languages for the day of the week display.
Interestingly, the various references do not indicate the material of construction but only the aesthetic finish, according to this diagram illustrating the main ones:
1802 smooth bezel
1803 knurled bezel
1804 bezel with brilliant-cut diamonds
1806 case and linen-textured bezel
1807 bark-finish ring
1811 linen-textured bezel
